This is an original lithographic poster created in 1962 and commissioned by the French Ministry of Transport and Public Works to promote tourism on the Côte d'Azur — one of the most celebrated travel posters of the 20th century.
The composition depicts a vibrant view of the Mediterranean Sea from the terrace of a seaside house, framed by decorative birds and trees — an image drawn directly from Picasso's oil on canvas Les Pigeons, painted in 1957 while living in the south of France. The same image was also used for a parallel edition promoting Cannes, making the Côte d'Azur version the more widely known of the two.
Printed in fourteen colors using traditional stone lithography at the Ateliers Mourlot in Paris, the poster was executed by master printer Henri Deschamps in close collaboration with Picasso — a testament to the enduring bond between the artist and the workshop that had served as his printmaking home since 1945.
One of the most iconic Mourlot posters ever produced — where Picasso's mastery of color meets the golden light of the French Riviera.
