Jean-Paul Riopelle (1923–2002) is Quebec's most celebrated artist on the world stage — a towering figure of postwar abstraction whose work bridged the School of Paris and the North American avant-garde. His richly textured, gestural canvases earned him an international reputation that placed him alongside the greatest abstract painters of his generation.
