This is an original lithographic poster created in 1984 by Joan Miró to promote an exhibition of lithographs from the Ateliers Mourlot collection in Japan — part of the remarkable series of Japanese touring exhibitions through which the Mourlot legacy reached one of the world's most passionate audiences for fine art printmaking.
That Miró was chosen as the visual ambassador for this particular Japanese tour is no coincidence. Joan Miró (1893–1983) had one of the deepest and most enduring relationships with the Mourlot workshop of any artist — a collaboration spanning decades that produced some of the most joyful, inventive, and widely recognized prints of the 20th century. His bold primary colors, spontaneous biomorphic forms, and playful cosmic symbols translate with particular power in Japan, where his aesthetic found a deeply receptive audience.
This poster was produced the year after Miró's death in December 1983 — making it a posthumous tribute as much as a promotional piece, printed by the atelier that had been his graphic home for so long. Mourlot posters produced for Japanese exhibitions are exceptionally rare outside of Japan, distributed exclusively within the country during the exhibition period.
A rare and moving piece — Miró's last visual presence in Japan, produced by the workshop that defined his graphic legacy.
