This is an original lithographic poster created in 1985 by Roger Mühl for the annual Beaujolais Nouveau selection of Georges Duboeuf — the most celebrated wine négociant in the Beaujolais, whose domaine in Romanèche-Thorins, on the border of Burgundy, became synonymous with the worldwide phenomenon of Beaujolais Nouveau. Every year, Duboeuf commissioned a major artist to create the label and poster for his new vintage — a tradition that transformed the wine's release into a cultural event as much as a viticultural one, and produced some of the most collectible wine art of the 20th century.
Roger Mühl (1929–2008), born in Strasbourg and trained at the École des Arts Décoratifs, was one of the most luminous colourists of post-war French painting. A direct heir to the Fauvist tradition — his palette recalling Bonnard and Matisse in its warmth and intensity — he devoted his career to the landscapes, gardens and sun-drenched terraces of the South of France. His work is held in major collections across Europe and the United States, and his prints and posters have become highly sought-after by collectors of both modern art and wine culture.
The pairing of Mühl and Duboeuf was an entirely natural one — a painter of joy and light celebrating a wine defined by its exuberance and immediacy. The 1985 vintage was a particularly celebrated year for Beaujolais Nouveau, and this poster captures that moment: the colours at their most festive, the line at its most generous.
This example is in excellent condition — grade A — and is presented unframed, ready for the wall it deserves.
