This is an original lithographic poster created in 1992 for an exhibition of lithographs at the Galerie Mourlot on Newbury Street in Boston — one of the most celebrated gallery shows of the Mourlot collection in North America, bringing together over forty editions spanning four decades of the atelier's collaboration with the great artists of the 20th century.
The image depicts the Îles de Lérins — the two small islands visible from the hills above the Bay of Cannes — rendered in Mühl's characteristic luminous palette. Roger Mühl (1929–2008) lived in Mougins in the south of France and drew constant inspiration from the Mediterranean light, the olive trees, the harbours and the hills of Provence. His work belongs to the lyrical tradition of the School of Paris — intimate, joyful, and suffused with warmth.
A variant edition of this same poster was also produced for a parallel exhibition of the Mourlot Collection at the Sogo Museum of Art in Nara, Japan — making each version specific to its exhibition and its audience.
A luminous and rare piece for the collector of the School of Paris — and a document of Mourlot's enduring legacy on both sides of the Atlantic.
