This is an original lithographic poster created in 1984 for an exhibition of Mourlot lithographs at the Galerie Jørgen in Oslo, Norway — one of a celebrated series of posters produced for this important Scandinavian showcase of the Mourlot collection, which also featured a companion poster by Picasso for the same exhibition.
The image — La Jardinière de Moustiers à la Nappe Rouge — is quintessential Cathelin: a richly colored still life combining the celebrated faïence pottery of Moustiers-Sainte-Marie with flowers and a vivid red tablecloth, rendered with the bold palette knife technique and luminous warmth that define his work. Bernard Cathelin (1919–2004) was one of the most distinguished painters of the postwar School of Paris, a student of Henri Matisse and Maurice Brianchon, and one of Mourlot's closest artistic collaborators — having worked alongside Picasso and Chagall in the Mourlot workshop and produced over 400 lithographs during his career.
His work was celebrated across Europe, North America, and Japan, and his deep connection to the south of France — to its light, its pottery, its flowers — gives every composition an immediate, sensory warmth.
A beautiful and warmly human piece for the collector of the School of Paris and the golden age of Mourlot printmaking.
